About Us

Annual Report 2009-2010 (PDF)

Since its inception in the early eighties Napier Family Centre has grown its services to meet identified needs and is now one of the largest NGO provider for social services in Napier. Our vision is to bring shining eyes to all children and their families in the community. Our mission is to provide services that help families along life’s journey and our values of integrity, teamwork, innovation and compassion guide our actions and decisions.

The Napier Family Centre was established in 1983 as the result of research commissioned by an inter-church group. The findings of this research were that many inner-city families were under severe stress and were not coping with the social pressures of the day. Families were bringing up children without physical or emotional support, in homes that lacked amenities most people took for granted. The research discovered sole parents who could not take their children to kindergarten or play centre because of their low self-worth. They did not feel worthy or able to converse with the people who attended those places and felt they had absolutely nothing in common. The services of budgeting, home-based family support and a playgroup with transport were quickly developed and talking to some of those families today, they say that without that acceptance and support, they doubt they could have seen their children grow up into the good citizens they are today. The Family Centre became their lifeline, their family, their model.

Today we reach over 10% of Napier’s families at all different stages of family life. Our programmes are designed by qualified and experienced professionals and we constantly evaluate these projects to ensure they meet the needs of the community.

A steadfast vision and the dedicated work of core staff and volunteers meant the Napier Family Centre grew steadily over the years, increasing its services to the community and continuing the focus on people’s well being and supporting families with quality care, professionalism, confidentiality, non-judgmental and respect.

Finally outgrowing the premises in Cathedral Lane, in September 2007 Napier Family Centre moved from the inner city to the suburb of Onekawa, refurbishing the St Stephens church complex on the corner of Wycliffe St and Morris Spence Ave.

"Napier Family Centre Inc. has undertaken and completed a total transformation of its business. It has moved its operation base from old premises in Napier to a remodelled church in Onekawa. It has been revitalised by using its business ventures to support and fund its community services. A strongly-led organisation with very clear objectives for management and growth, the Napier Family Centre is retaining and enhancing the services it provides. The work this organisation achieves is an eye opener for all those in the region."

In November 2011 Napier Family Centre was awarded the Westapc HB Chamber of Commerce Business Award in the Not for Profit Category sponsored by EIT.
The judge's comments were:

“The Napier Family Centre is the Westpac Business Awards – EIT Not for Profit Business 2011 winner.  This award recognises excellence in the not for profit sector in a period when discretionary and philanthropic funding is extremely hard to come by.  This highly successful organisation has continued to grow during this period via a collection of business endeavours such as Bright Futures and Sunny Days which have created early Childhood Education businesses that contribute significant funding to allow the Napier Family Centre to benefit in excess of 2000 local families.  The Judges were impressed with the organisations focus on delivering on the its vision and strategic objectives using the commercial success of its business operations.  They were responsive to the community’s needs, have well developed business plans, financial management systems and have taken steps into social media to access their younger customers.  Staff were seen as experts in their fields and were truly responsive to making a difference.  This organisation has operated under the radar for nearly 30 years providing the community with a commercially sound and sustainable structure to allow it to benefit the local families of generations to come.  A truly exceptional “Shining Eyes” Hawke’s Bay success story.”
